In 2021, the Kia Sedona MPV is entering its final year in its current form. The automaker confirmed some time ago that a new generation is on the way for 2022.
This next-gen model debuts this year in South Korea and, as it has been since 1998, it will be called the Kia Carnival. Until now, we had no reason to believe its name would change here, but according to the documents that have been unveiled, it may well be that North America will also get the Carnival name on Kia’s van, standardizing so the model around the world.
The documents come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the US equivalent of Transport Canada, and they confirm that the next Sedona will in fact take the Carnival name for the US market when the next generation is launched.
It would be easy to jump to conclusions and assume that the van offered in Canada will follow suit. Easy but maybe wrong. Think of the Nissan Qashqai, called Rogue Sport in the United States, or the Mitsubishi RVR, known as the Outlander Sport south of the border. Confirmation for our market will have to come from reliable sources, in other words, no assumptions.
More information regarding the Carnival 2022 minivan will be coming to us in the coming months, when Kia may confirm the model name change. In the meantime, we’re also keeping an eye out for what kind of powertrain the MPV will get, as a reminder that most of its competitors in the segment have been overhauled and updated recently, and two are now offering electric powertrains.
