Above average: V6 power as standard; 3,500 pound towing capacity; affordable prices; long warranty.

Below average: No hybrid available; missing the AWD option; driving aids are only available on higher trim levels; lower fuel economy.

Consensus: The Kia Sedona offers excellent value for money and excellent quality. Backed by a 5 year / 60,000 mile base warranty, Sedona’s low entry price will appeal to many. However, some of the best security features require a step towards the more expensive trim levels.

Below average: The large console eliminates the passage to the second row; CVT transmission response; no plug-in hybrid minivan models.

Consensus: The all-new Sienna is a marked improvement over the previous model launched in 2010. The hybrid powertrain delivers spirited acceleration and an incredible 36 mpg. The second row slides back and forth up to 25 inches.

Sedona vs. Sienna: Minibus Showdown

Kia Sedona

The Kia Sedona is a solid performer in minivan circles with a wide range of trim levels but a single powertrain, a front-wheel drive 3.3-liter V6 as well as a traditional 8-speed automatic transmission. With an all-new Sedona slated for 2022, the current model only has a few upgrades for 2021. The package is solid, the quality is high, and the warranty impressive. Overall mileage with the V6 engine is not that good at 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

The safety content of the Sedona improves as you increase trim levels, which is not good news for buyers of budget minivans. Best value is the mid-level EX trim which adds key perks such as roof rails, keyless entry, push-button start, 18-inch aluminum wheels, heated front seats, visor – rear window sun, leather upholstery and wireless smartphone charging. On the security side of the ledger, the EX trim adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automated emergency braking (optional), and front and rear parking sensors.

Toyota Sienna

All new for 2021, the Toyota Sienna’s makeover is impressive, especially its new hybrid powertrain that delivers 36 mpg. It’s the only powertrain offered, but it’s available with all-wheel drive. The interior has been redesigned with a more permanent center console rather than the open passage commonly found with MPVs. The good news is that the console features oversized storage bins for larger items. Available in LE, XLE XSE, Limited and Platinum trims, the XLE is our favorite for its “foot movement” sensor that opens the sliding doors. The second row captain’s seats have 25 inches of front-to-rear travel, but cannot be removed.

Like most Toyotas, the Sienna has a pre-collision and pedestrian detection system to help avoid accidents. Using a camera and radar, audible and visual alerts apply the brakes to avoid incidents. Lane departure warning with steering assistance, adaptive radar cruise control, lane departure assistance and automatic high beams help keep the driver abreast of changing road conditions and on the road. ‘warn if he is tired and needs a break.

Similarities

Spacious and flexible interiors; electric sliding doors; up to 8 seats; front-wheel drive architecture.
